XV Corps 38th Division 115 Brigade made attempts throughout the day to take part of Mametz Wood but were driven back by machine gun fire. 17th Div. 51 Brigade, 52 Brigade and 50 Brigade put in a series of attacks on Contalmaison but were beaten back by by machine gun fire, German artillery and strong counter-attacks. III Corps 23rd Div. 24 Brigade and 68 Brigade attempted to take Contalmison and Baliff Wood. They were unsuccessful. 19th Div. using elements of 58 and 56 Brigade were successful in taking two trenches which they consolidated. X Corps 12th Div. using elements of 74, 36 and 75 Brigades.attacked towards Ovillers and were able to consolidate up to the secong of the three German trenches. 25th Div were fully engaged in defending the Leipzig salient against a fierce German attack. 49th Div. were also successful in repulsing German attacks to the north of Thiepval.
