Summary
A Viking force under Olaf Trysssggvasson, a Norwegian, in company with two Danish warlords, had been raiding South East England. He landed his men on Northney Island, Essex, where he was opposed by the local leader Brihtnoth. At first confined to the island the Vikings were allowed to cross the causeway and deploy. Brihtnoth was killed and a large part of the Saxon army fled. His hearth troops fought to the last.
This Viking victory had lasting effects in both Dangeld and settlement.
