Summary
The Austrians continued to press the French in their retreat/withdrawal from Germany. The French had lifted their blockade of Mainz on the 13th October as Jourdan's army retreated westwards. In spite of their superior numbers the morale of the French was low and the Austrian cavalry was particularly effective.
