Summary
The French 74 gun ship Généreux escaped from the Battle of the Nile while en route to Corfu came upon HMS Leander[50 guns]. Leander had been detached by Nelson to carry his despatches reporting his victory at Aboukir Bay. Leander was short of crew many having been assigned to man prizes, she was also becalmed. Généreux came up with the breeze and action was commenced at 1000 hrs. Action continued until 1530 hrs by which time HMS Leander had become unmanageable and had many dead and wounded. The ship was surrendered to the French.
