Summary
After Dresden Napoleon had sent Vandamme commanding I Corps, XIV Corps & I Cavalry Corps [37,000] to cut the line of retreat of the allied army. Instead of finding broken units of the retreating army the French came upon General Ostermann's 44,000 flank guard of Barclay de Tolly's 'Army of Bohemia'. The two corps engaged in a frontal slogging match until General Kliest, retreating from Dresden with 10,000 Prussians fell on the rear of the French. Although they fought desperately the French were overwhelmed and Vandamme was captured.
