Summary
The French pursuit of the fleeing Austrian army was led by the first division of Massena's lV Corps. Klenau's Vl Corps of 18,000 men formed the rearguard. Only about 3,000 men held the fortified village while the remainder of the Austrian army continued to withdraw northwards.
