At the end of the Second World war Korea was arbitarily divided into communist North Korea and democratic South Korea along the 38th parallel. The North attacked the South on the 25th June 1950. The United Nations under the leadership of the U.S.A. came to the aid of the South. The war ranged back and forth, with the Chinese putting a large number of men in the field to support the North. An armistice was signed on July 27th 1953 but no formal peace treaty has ever been concluded.
