Summary
Viscount Dundee, commanding the Jacobites,[nearly 3,000] decided to attack the Government force, under Mackay, [over 4,000] in spite of his inferior numbers.
Mackay extended his line by thinning it. Dundee extended his line to match in length but by increasing the gaps between the highlanders. The Government troops were overwhelmed at specific points by the highland charge and the whole line collapsed in close quarter fighting. Only a quarter of the Government force made it back to Stirling 36 hours after the battle.
