Summary
Thinking that Gen. Johnston's Confederates, who were entrenched in strong positions along Kenesaw Mountain on the approaches to Atlanta, would expect another flanking move, Sherman decided to hit them head on. He had underestimated the strength of the defences, and the heat of a southern, summer day. The Army of Tennessee threw them back, and the heat drained their strength. Sherman called off the attack following 3,000 casualties.
