Summary
Montrose, trapped between two forces, led the Royalists on a 48hrs forced march to surprise the stronger force, the Campbell's under Auchinbreck. Attacks on the weaker flanks were successful and, although the Campbell centre fought valiantly, they eventually broke. The Royalists owed the victory to the generalship of Montrose.
