Summary
The battle which brought an end the Second Coalition.
Archduke John attempted to prevent Moreau and the French from advancing on Vienna by blocking the only good road through the Hohenlinden Forest. After some skirmishing on the 2nd, the Austrians made a frontal assault against Ney and the French centre but General Richepanse launched a counter-attack on the Austrian left flank, crumpling it and forcing a general withdrawal. The pursuit turned this into a rout, and as Archduke Charles took over command of the Austrian Army, he sued for peace.
