Summary
Napoleon's had surmised that Ney's VI Corps, pushed forward as it was, would be the target for the main Russian advance. Orders given to Ney permitted him to fall back slowly, inviting continuous contact and pursuit by the Russians. Ney made a stand on the 6th at Deppen. On the 7th Bennigsen became aware of the perilous position he had been drawn into and he withdrew.
