Second or Great Northern War
War Name : Second or Great Northern War
Date(s) : 1700 - 1721
Summary
The Swedes under Charles Xll faced threats from the Danes, the Poles and the Russians. Later in the war Prussia, Hanover and Saxony all weighed in against Sweden. Although Charles Xll managed to persuade the Turks to come in against Russia their intervention was only brief 1710-1711. After Charles was killed in combat the outcome was that Sweden's power was reduced and Russia, as developed by Peter the Great, emerged as a major European power.
