The 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment, 450 men, supported by specialist Royal Marine and Royal Artillery units attacked Argentinian forces established at Port Darwin and Goose Green. The aim was to protect the line of advance on Stanley from a flanking attack, from this position. The assult on Darwin was supported by naval 4.5 inch guns on the night of the 27th, but the Argentine forces fought hard before surrendering. Pushing on to Goose Green the Paras met well prepared, dung in defences. The Argentinian strength had been greatly under estimated and after a fierce fight 1,200 Argentinians surrendered. Seventeen paras including their commanding officer were killed. As well as securing the flank, this provided a great morale boost to the British, both in the S Atlantic and at home.
