Summary
The two French Corps were assigned to Siege Force and Covering Force. The majority of French losses were due to sickness, two of their generals died of malaria. The Spanish defence was exceptionally determined including many local volunteers and a battalion of women. Girona was reinforced on two occasions. Only 4,248 were fit at the time of the surrender.
