Summary
The French siege was fairly slack in part because the troops were of second quality. [An Italo-Neapolitan division and Reille's Provisional division] Both sides heard the news of the French defeat at Bailén which boosted the Spaniards and demoralised the French. A pincer attack launched from the city inflicted only light casualties but the nervous Duhesme ordered a withdrawal.
