Summary
Caesar attempted to reduce the town of Gergovia, but it was a strong position, well defended by Vercingetorix's Gauls who had stocked the town with provisions and laid waste to the surrounding area. Hurried by the supply problem, and by further uprisings in norther Gaul Caesar was forced into attacking the town but the legions were thrown back with heavy losses. He was forced to withdraw.
