Summary
Wellington's blockade of Almeida was threatened by Massena's army of Portugal. Although Wellington was outnumbered, his 38,800 against 52,500 he held a strong defensive position. The weakness was that he had over extended his flanks. Through difficult manoeuvres, under attack, he managed to correct this error. Massena was unable to break through to Almeida.
