French War of the Second Coalition
War Name : French War of the Second Coalition
Date(s) : 1798 - 09 February 1801
Part of : The French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars ,
Summary
The aquistion by France of further territories by force or the threat of force brought about the Second Coalition. The Coalition was between Russia, Austria, Britain, Portugal, Ottoman Empire and Naples. Early French successes were followed by Austro-Russian successes until the allies failed to continue their full cooperation with one another. Napoleon's expedition to Egypt affected the naval balance more than the land battles of the European mainland. Major French successes at Marengo and Hohenlinden caused Austria to sue for peace. The Coalition collapsed when Austria signed the Peace of Lunéville on February 9th 1801.
