Summary
Following the collapse of Japanese power in Vietnam after the Second World War, Ho Chi Minh declared an independent Republic. The French, however wished to re-impose their colonial authority over the region, leading to civil unrest, and war, with the Viet Minh guerrillas being backed by China.
