Summary
The French laid seige to Tournai and had time to prepare the ground on which to meet the allied relieving force. The armies were of almost equal size. Inspite of considerable bravery on the allied side they could not break the French position and had to execute a fighting withdrawal. The French went on to take Tournai and thereafter occupied most of the Austrian Nether lands.
