Summary
Massena had been despatch by Bonaparte to halt the advanced guard of the Austrian [Alvintzy] advance. He failed to dislodge them from islands in the Brenta river. As more Austrians began to come up Massena withdrew.

Bonaparte had intelligence that Alvintzy's advanced guartds were far, too far, ahead of their respective main bodies. He despatched Massena's division to deal with Baron Liptay's force at the crossing of the Brenta river at Fontaniva.
