A truly momentus and catastrophic war which plumbed new depths of waste and suffering amongst its participants, claiming in excess of 30 million military casualties over its 4 years across Europe, the Balkans, the Middle East and East Africa.
It was termed 'The Great War' as it was thought, incorrectly, that there could never again be a conflict as huge or destructive.
