Summary
General Rawlinson's British Fourth Army followed a rolling barrage to attack the German Second army but met their highly organised defences.
Machine-guns cut down the advancing infantry and by the end of the day little or no gains had been made, but 60,000 British soldiers had fallen, nearly 20,000 killed, - the worst losses suffered by the British Army in a single day in it's history.
