Summary
Napoleon created the VIII Corps with Mortier in command and gave it the task of covering the Grande Armee's left flank along the north bank of the Donau [Danube]. Mortier did not follow Napoleon's strict advice to cover his own left [northern] flank and was attacked in the Dürnstein defile by an enemy with twice his numbers. There were heavy losses on both sides. After the battle the Austro-Russian continued their withdrawal eastwards.
