Early Viking Raids on England
Summary
With most of England under Danish control the kingdom of Wessex under King Alfred came under attack. At first the campaign swung in Alfred's favour but then turned very heavily against him. Finally the Saxons triumphed and Alfred was able to force the Danes to accept the peace of Wedmore in 885. Small attacks by European Vikings continued until 896.
