Summary
The French held a vital bridge over the river Tagus which they had fortified. It was important to Wellington that he should hold the bridge in order to protect his southern flank when he pushed forward into northern Spain. General Rowland Hill was despatched to take and destroy the bridge which he did brilliantly.

The bridge was 3 miles south of the town of Almáraz which lay between Talavera and Trujillo, western Spain. (Spain)
