Summary
Massena, given an army of 65,000 men and orders by Napoleon to take Portugal, found the town and fortress of Ciudad Rodrigo commanded the road over the frontier. He gave the task of taking the fortress to Ney's VI Corps. The Spanish garrison of 5,500 under the command of Andreas Herrasti put up a gallant but eventually hopeless defence.
