Summary
Wellington surprised the French by marching his army through the January snows to invest the fortress of Ciudad Rodrigo. Surprise was neccessary to prevent superior French forces who were dispersed across the country concentrating against him. After 12 days the fortress was stormed and taken but with the loss of 59 officers and 503 men. Still a remarkable success.
