Summary
Sir Ralph Hopton brought William Waller to battle, hoping to make it decisive.
Early succeses by the Royalist foot were overshadowed by chaotic and piecemeal cavalry action, badly coordinated by the Earl of Forth, drawing the whole Royalist effort further into the 'arena' formed by the ridges. Waller was able to out-flank Hopton and the Royalists fell back to Basing House.
Location
In and around a horsse-shoe ridge between Alresford, Hinton Ampner and Cheriton, near Winchester, England.
