Summary

Linois force of three ships of the line, one frigate and five gunboats lay close inshore under the guns of Algeciras batteries. Rear Admiral Saumarez attempted to attack with 5 line of battle ships but the very light and fickle winds denied him the ability to manoeuvre. The Hannibal [74] ran aground under the guns of the batteries and was compelled to surrender. The British hauled of to Gibraltar.
