Summary
Bonaparte saw the opportunity to destroy the advanced guard of the Austrian southern pincer, while leaving Vaubois to hold the northern arm. He sent Augereau along the main road towards Caldiero and Massena in a left hook through Colognolo. The day started late and Augereau was thrown back from Caldiero by well served and well positioned artillery. Alvintzy fed troops from his main body into the battle so that the French became outnumbered. Bonaparte had to fall back on fortified city of Verona.
