Summary
Davout, ordered by Napoleon to fall back towards Abensberg from Ratisbon, was moving through the Saal defile when he was attacked by the Austrian forces. The Austrians under Arch-Duke Charles were slow to develop their attack and Davout organized an excellent defence with two of his divisions hitting the Austrians in the flank. The Austrians withdrew and the French Corps went on to make its link up with Napoleon.
