Summary
The Mahdists under the Khalifa Abdulla held the Sudan having expelled the Anglo-Egyptians in 1885. The British, partly to thwart French and Italian colonial interests, decided to re-conquer the Sudan. In 1889 the Mahdist forces were destroyed and Anglo-Egyptian government was re-established.
