Summary
A short and bloody defeat inflicted upon A.P.Hill's Confederates by elements of Meade's Union troops.
After months of cautious manouevering in Virginia, Lee and Meade shadowing each other, Hill came upon what he though was the rearmost Union corps in the process of crossing a ford, and vulnerable. He hastilly ordered Heth to attack but they were taken in the flank by Warren's 2nd Corps who were waiting hidden behind the railroad embankment. 2 of Heth's divisions were all but destroyed, with a North Carolina regt. suffering 70% casualties including all but 3 of it's 36 officers.
