Summary
Admiral Tchichagov committed only part of his forces against the French bridgehead being held by Oudinot. The thin French line held on desperately until reinforced by elements of the III Corps. The Old Guard were also ordered up in reserve. After a magnificent cavalry charge by Dumerc's Cuirassiers the Russians fell back and left the road open for the French.
