Summary
The Russian army commander failed to heed warnings of the approach of an effective French force. He left his advanced guard unsupported in the town while his cavalry went off foraging and most of his troops were on the western bank of the river. The advanced guard and other troops fell back chaotically over the river but succeeded in destroying the Borisov bridges.
