Summary
With the aim of protecting his gains made in the first 6 weeks of his Itallian Campaign, Napoleon decided to drive back Beaulieu's forces positioned along the River Mincio.
He concentrated at Borghetto, taking the bridge with his elite units, then fanning out to threaten the Austrian rear. Beaulieu couldn't concentrate his own forces to meet the French, so fell back to the Adige.
