Summary
After initial success Marcognet, the French commander, dropped his guard. His poor generalship comitted less than half his available troops [12,000 men] to the action. The Austrians were superior in cavalry, Marcognet had none. A late counter-attack threw the Austrians back but the Franco-Italians were still forced to withdraw.
