Summary
The French were the advanced guard of an army of 90,000 men. The allies, only 1,500 on the first day, guardinga river crossing with little support close at hand. But the Frenc would not force a river crossing while it was defended by Wellington even with such a superiority in numbers which they could soon have gathered. The French marched south, up the river, in order to find crossings which they could ford.
