Summary
The death of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles Vl in 1740 gave rise to a general power struggle involving most of the states of Europe. The Pragmatic Sanction [agreed1713] which allowed Maria Theresa to inherit was opposed by some states who wish to see parts of the Austrian Empire broken off. e.g Prussia wanted Silesia, France wanted the Austrian Netherlands, France and England pusued their colonial conflicts. The war contained twenty significant battles/sieges, five of them large scale.
The campaign ended in the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle 18 October 1748.
