Summary
A large Lancastrian army raised by Queen Margaret held much of the north of England. The threat could not be ignored by York who marched north with a small force recruiting on the way. The Duke of York made his base in his castle of Sandal but instead of waiting for reinforcements he sallied out to meet the Lancastrians in open battle. His force was caught within the arms of a pincer movement and suffered greatly. The Duke of York and many other prominent Yorkists were killed in the battle.
