Viking raids on England 899-1016
Summary
Attempts by Alfred's successors to expel the Danes from the Danelaw were initially successful but provoked further incursions from the continent. In 991 the Norwegians won the battle of Maldon and in 1016 the Danes under Cnut [Canute] won the battle of Assandun. Cnut also regained the kingdom of Mercia and the Danelaw. On the death of Edmund [King of Wessex] in 1016 England became Danish under Cnut.
