Summary
A series of indeterminate clashes to the north and west of Nice. The Austrians were fighting on French soil but were on extended lines of communication. The French were not particularly determined to throw them back because the strategic plan would leave the Austrian force isolated.
On getting the news of Napoleon's push over the Alps Melas at once marched his troops out of France intending to go to Turin.
