Summary
Both ships were sailing alone. Daylight revealled each to the other. Macedonian, though lighter gunned, was superior in sailing ability and held the weather gage. Macedonian changed course to close with the enemy. Carden intended to fight a long-range battle of manoeuvre not realising until it was too late that Decatur had superior fire power. The ships never attained the position of broadside to broadside Decatur maintaining a position off Macedonian's starboard bow. Gradually the British ship was shot to pieces. With 36 dead and 68 wounded, with most of her rigging shot away and most guns out of action Macedonian struck her colours.
Decatur took his prize into New York. Carden was court matialled and although criticised for not using his ships superior speed he was acquitted.
