Summary
The Russian advanced guard of Wittenstein's I Corps caught the French XI Corps commanded by Marshall Victor. Although outnumbered and with a significant number of militia men in their ranks Russian morale was high and they inflicted significant losses on the French. The French northern flank guard was now fighting desperately to keep open the route for Napoleon and the retreating main army.
