30th Division of Xlll Corps managed to establish themselves in the south-east corner of Trones Wood, troops of the 9th Division attempted the eastern edge but were repulsed with heavy losses. 38th Div. of XV Corps failed in their attempt on Mametz Wood. 17th Div. were successful in securing two thirds of Wood trench. lll Corps 23rd Div attempted Contalmaision but were stopped by machine-gun fire. 19th Div. spent most of the day fending off German attacks. X Corps 12th Division[having relieved 32nd Div.] had a number of successes capturing the trench which lead to the church in Orvillers.
