Summary
The American forces under Washington crossed the Delaware to attack 3 Hessian regiments billeted in Trenton. They were taken completely by surprise and overwhelmed, most being taken captive. Large quantities of badly-needed supplies were gathered too. American losses were negligible. The action also precipitated Gen. Cornwallis to move the main British force from Princeton to catch Washington.
