Summary
Following a royalist rebellion in France's most important Mediterranean naval base and it's subsequent handover to the British, Generals Carteaux then Dugommier invested the city.
Following an offensive plan devised by the young Artillery Major Napoleon Buonaparte, Dugommier's forces captured the heights overlooking the harbour. The danger from these positions as batteries against the ships in the harbour forced Admiral Hood to evacuate the city and scuttle the French Royalist fleet.
