Summary

In a brilliant amphibious operation the British & Allies achieved a surprise landing. Extremely poor command by Gen. Sir John Murray lead to the beginning of a formal siege rather than a rapid storming. The fortifications were weak after the French took the place. When Murray heard of the approach of Suchet's relieving force [only 7,000 strong] he panicked. The siege guns were spiked and the 1st Spanish army were left to face the music alone.
